Yes, we know. You are right – it is supposed to be Mahjong, but the KRC-20 naming protocol only allows a maximum of 6 bits or characters in a token ticker symbol so here we are.

This KRC-20 project was inspired by Mahjong (a tile based game of skill, strategy, and luck) that was developed in the 19th century in China. Many of you will also know this game as Majong because of the online versions you download from the Play Store and the App Store that are spelled without the ‘h’.

I first started playing Majong on my phone after I ended up immobilized in the hospital for a long period of time and fell in love with it. Playing Majong was one of the things that helped guide me out of the darkness back into the light and will always have a special place in my heart.

At this time, there is no plan to develop our own Majong app or a physical tile set, but we could if there are members of the community with the necessary skill sets and everybody agrees that it makes sense.

Mahjong was originally called 麻雀 (pinyin: máquè; Jyutping: maa4 zoek3–2)—meaning sparrow—which is still used in several Chinese languages, mostly in the south, such as Cantonese and Hokkien. The current sparrow logo was obtained from an actual Mahjong Tile that was full color and then converted into all black.
